Is a white leghorn classified as silver based or white based?
Are there any other leghorn colours that are silver based?
If i put a brown legorn roo over a white leghorn hen, will the male and female chics come out different colours?
Also, a silver rooster over any colour hen will not work right?

Thanks

Yes White Leghorns are on a silver base as are blacks and blues I think. However, White Leghorns have dominant white as well as silver. Dominant white tends to mask most other colours.

Brown Leghorns are on a gold base but they often have autosomal red too.

So if you mate a Brown Leghorn male to a White Leghorns female, male progeny will be silver based whites and female chicks gold based whites. If that's all that is segregating in that cross, then there's probably a subtle difference on hatching.

However if have Brown Leghorn has autosomal red too, then most of the progeny will show some effect of that, so you won't be able to tell the colour of the genders apart on hatching.

I think black Anconas are generally on a Silver base. I say generally because there are red Anconas in Australia and they're certainly on a gold base. There are crosses between them that indicate that the blacks are generally on a Silver base, but not always. Seems that there are gold based blacks too.

They're also based on ER (Birchen). That's quite dominant so you're likely to get black chicks when crossed to just about any colour other than white.

So I can't think of a cross using Ancona females that will give you sex linked down colour in chicks sorry.
