Three of our ancona cockerels getting settled in their favourite roosting place for the night - a mango tree. Their eyes don't look quite like that - night time shot.

Nice looking Ancona chick Cathy. Hope it grows up to be a good one for you.

We have about a dozen of these now and more coming. Hopefully some of them will be nice. They lay lovely eggs so even if we are not brilliant breeders of ancona we still like to hatch a few.

I'm wondering about the genotype of Red Anconas.... From the genotypes table in sticky, they can be

ER/ER s+/s+ (s+/-) mo/mo (Db/db+)? w+/w+ Id/Id (Id/-) p+/p+ r+/r+
e+/e+ s+/s+ (s+/-) mo/mo w+/w+ Id/Id (Id/-) p+/p+ r+/r+
eWh/eWh s+/s+ (s+/-) Mh/Mh mo/mo w+/w+ Id/Id (Id/-) p+/p+ r+/r+

So they may be on ER, e+ or ewh. Aside from the chick downs do these different types look different as adults? How come eb is not represented? Which base is the most common?

(sticking my neck out here, many of them look e+ to me)

I'm just looking at combs at the moment.

The Ancona Standards says the single should be medium sized with 5-7 serrations that are deep, broad and even. the serrations forming a regular curve coming well back and and following the line of the head, free from excrescences. (Excrescenes would cover any abnormal bit sticking out for example a side sprig.)

Type is the first priority but at the early stages, we will pick out some to remove to keep numbers down.

This is a cockerel from last year that has six serrations. Some of them may not be wide enough at the bottom. (Excuse photo - taken through wire from a long distance.)

Here is a young female from this season whose comb is beginning to fall over.

Image

This young male has what some call a 'fishtail' at the back and the serrations may not be broad enough at the base, so pencil-like.

And another showing a different back.

At this point I can't show a good example. I'm going to have to go looking.

He has a nice comb. Wide serrations, no fishtail. 5 serrations. You must be happy with that one. I hope the rest of him is as good.
