I know little about genetics so I am hoping someone can give me the answer to this question about parentage of this wheaten / blue (?) cockerel ..... sorry about bad quality of pics but he has very feathery pink legs.

The 3 black and 1 yellow chicks were from my eggs hatched by a friend, but unfortunately she didn't get to see who came from what egg.

Here are the two possible dads (a marans and a croad X marans - my money's on the latter  )

Image

Possible mums are:
blue araucana (have one black chick that is from the araucana as it has a crest)
    light sussex
    black langshan
    black langshan X barnie
black ancona (have one black chick from the ancona which was easily identified by the white tips on the feathers and body shape)

I'm thinking its from the light sussex - is this even a possibility / likely?

thanks

Michelle

Michelle,

Since this discussion involves genetics it is a bit beyond the scope of the What is This? forum (viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7955165).

I think that you'll get more helpful input from the Breeds & Breedings forum to which I will move it. :)

Wheaten chicks are born yellow also, then at around 4 weeks they colour up boys will develop dark wings. Does it have feathered legs?

Since the chick is developing blue on the wings, it is from a black wheaten roo over a blue hen or a blue wheaten roo over a black hen so either of the two wheaten roos could be the father, and the mother will be the opposite colour to the roo.

Could also be from a blue wheaten over a blue hen just to make it even messier.

As Jon Pointed out Black hen and blue male OR reverse . I would go for the black Langshan as the mother ( note the comb  ) Then the blue Marans x Croad is the father. See the middle toe is longer also, which means must have Croad input ( The only Croad being in the blue /red male . )
He has gold coming through in the wings and the hackles ( would like to see him in a few months )Since his father would have come from a pale egg shell coloured egg and his mother from the same ( AUST LANGSHAN ) his use for FRENCH Marans would be doubtful .
I like the double lacing on the Barnie at the back

Staring at the Blue maransa cross, I cant help but say he is the dad. Therefore your mum is black.

But, I think you may have 2 different mums. Any of the mums have feathered legs?

Thanks Martin and Raf for responding.

Here is a pic of the 2 possible black mums (mother and daughter actually) with Maggie's dad in the middle.

Missy the Langshan is black with black eyes and feathered legs. Maggie her daughter is black too with orange eyes, no feathers on her legs and looks more barnie in the head.

Here is a current pic of the blue boy - sorry its not a good one. He will be culled this weekend unfortunately as the current owners already have a rooster and he (the current roo) is not happy with this new guy being around.
