Chicken07 has some accidental Welsummer/Marans crosses (someone hopped the fence :) ) and they've thrown to the Welsummer side in terms of looks. Now we just need to see if they throw to the Marans for egg colour (ie improvement thereof). If so, that's got to be a better cross than Brown Leghorn ... :)

I think tink.kilkee has already tried this cross BUT as I pointed out to them it is wheaten from the Marans and will take a while to get back to Wellies as they should be . I believe the Wellies eggs ( terracota as it is , is also a diffferent colour to that of the Marans eggs . )
In MY opinion the very worst thing you could do is add Brown Leghorn . The ONLY "QUICK FIX" is to buy in birds that have the quality you want .( hence your request here  ) If these are not available then it is back to the long haul and selectively breed . Trouble is with Wellies, and Barnies for that matter, there are so many things you need to be mindful of . The only answer is breed 100's and cull hard .

ARE THERE ANY WELSUMMER BREEDERS WHO BIRDS LAY DARK BROWN EGGS ? I am trying to breed a line of Welsummers which lay the dark brown eggs & so I am seeking some very dark brown Welsummer eggs. In the past I have bought eggs from breeders who said their eggs were dark but on arrival I found them to be pale. If there are any breeders who have such birds or who may knowm of breeders who have the such birds would you be kind enough to email the particulars to me.

Are these dark enough for you.??

Ideally I am looking for slightly darker eggs however if you could emailm me your address I would be interested in 2 dozen eggs provided the birds are true to type & don't throw to the brown leghorn. Many thanks for your interest
