I have a non descript cuckoo hen who other than egg colour
Would pass for a cuckoo marans my question is:
If i mate her to a good dark hatched black copper Marans then
Use a a cockerel from this mating over bc marans hens
Could i eventually breed a cuckoo Marans doing this? Just learning bout this stuff!!
Thanks in advance!!

You should get some barred cockerels resulting, and all pullets not barred. If you put a resulting barred cockerel over a copper black female, you should get about 50% barred offspring of both gender.

Barred English marans have just recently been imported into Australia, and there is a waiting list if your interested in the real thing :).

It will take a few years to get the egg colour right as most copper Marans being bred up lack the real intense terracotta colour required by the breed standard. I would wait till stock become available from the imports then you will havd the real deal not a crossbred

Just bear in mind also, that the British cuckoo marans is a clean legged bird, not feathered like the French Marans.

Hi every one please do not cross a pure bread maran strain to other breed. we are having a lot problem to fix the damage done in the past .
there s few good line of pure cuckoo English and Franch type all work in progress ,new to this country.
i m working my self on a project to recreate a Cuckoo maran variety from the existing maran flock. i started 2014 with a pure cuckoo rooster English type ( he hatched from rely dark egg) and 2 wheaten hens ( they both good type and lay dark eggs number 6 ).this year 2015 I m on the F2 .impressed by the result . silver cuckoo DF, Dark cockoo, silver wheaten, black pullet, the rest all cull cockerels and pullets except for the black ones are all pullets.
next year 2016 breeding season I m going use a Birchen maran cockerel pure silver to cross him with a silver cuckoo hen ( this cross work very well ) I m trying to remove the Autusomal red fron the cuckoo cockerels in the F3 generation.

I m actually working with a lot marans varieties. Wheaten, Black copper, Blue copper. Splash copper. Birchen, Silver cuckoo. Black tail buff. White and golden Silmon. Very happy with a eggs color 5/6/7. the white still around 4 a lot work need to be done .
MARANS ARE GORGEOUS CHOOKS
cheers

If you do enough crosses back from any introduction of a different breed it will end up being classed as pure. Keep playing with it if you are keen enough.

I obtained my BCM from Victoria from a suppisedly reputable source but certainly would not recommend the source. I am waiting for my chickens to mature so i can use the darkest layers.
