Hi all,

My first hatch gave me 15 chickens. 10 of which are hens. Two of the hens came out like the image below.
If I manage to hatch a rooster that looks the same is there a high likelihood of the babies looking the same?
My rooster is pictured below so I was quite surprised to get such different looking young. The mother is most likely one of my black hens I suppose!

The pullet looks to be barred and if you hatched a rooster that was also barred and you bred them together I believe the offspring should all be barred.

If the chooks aren't purebreeds, then a barred rooster will give you a fair chance of mostly barred offspring, but also a good chance of offspring with other characteristics.

Crossbreeds are good fun to see how genetics are inherited but if you want to hatch chicks that look mostly like their parents with a fair amount of predictability, you want to source purebreeds.

If you like the barred breeds, look at Plymouth Rock, as a good example.

Thanks so much for the response. I won't know if ive hatched a rooster for another couple of weeks. Fingers crossed. Not for any particular reason, just curiosity and we like how they look. I guess I'm more shallow than I thought! Haha.
