I though it is time to start a thread about this marans variety .almost lost only few breeders around the world are lucky enough to have them and I m one of them .
they come to me from Cathy s WA .she lost a lot of her flock few years back cause of the bush fire .

I received a magazine Number 72 from the Marans Club de France ( French marans club ) .they have decided to give this variety a push and encourage a marans breeders to give it a go .

they have decided as well to split this variety into 2 sub varieties .
1) Black Tail buff ; New Hampshire type of body color . lighter with the contrast of the 3 major colours
Hackle = rich lighter buff
back ,shoulder and the lancets = darker and rich buff ,glossy
Chest and the lower part of the body lighter and flat buff . no sheen neither lacing
Tail black with green sheen
under fluff buff

2) Red buff . Rhode island type .darker ,richer and more uniform throughout the body .the shoulder more intense red
under fluff .red .darker is better .

here a photo of my youngest Red Buff marans .
I have a Blue tail red buff

it is easier to work with them as separate varieties ,less culling to breed the red one out .

cheers

PS I ll post more photos later today plus more information about they full standard

few pick of my BTB marans pullets of this year .

this years I used 5 hens to produce this generation ,so the body color is not uniform yet .
some hens throw Red Buff ,others manage throw lighter buff .

one thing they all share is ,they all have a true marans body type . long back ,chunky body ,feathered shanks . nice small thin tail .pretty orange eyes ..etc.................

let see what sort of colored eggs they ll lays .

looking forward to see that day .

thanks .
I m happy with they body type .
body color still not uniform yet .few more generation to go .

now it is easier because the French Club split the buff variety from the red . I don t have to do a lot culling to keep only variety going .

now I have to wait few more weeks to see what color egg they will lay .

very old variety ,no much work has been done to it in Europe .
I only know one person in France is keeping it alive . this person is Monique Berte . the biggest marans breeder in the world

the Club de France has split the variety into 2 .
1) Black tail buff
2) black tail red
