So I have set up a temporary pen in my vege garden as this year's heat and dry have made it a bit too hard to work with. The idea is that the chickens dig up the the area the pen is on.It will be moved as the area is picked clean and dug. At the moment I just have 4 pekin hens in there as they are spare from a breeding trial. However they are very enthusiastic diggers. Has anyone found a particular breed that would be more suitable for this job. Cheers.
PS the pekins are loving it though.

Big, heavy birds. My two Australorps dig very well.

I find that the feathered legged birds tend to do less damage than the clean legged breeds so I would choose large clean legs. Fork up a bit to start them off and sprinkle in some grain for encouragement.
