We had a great day at Lawnton show today winning champion large Sussex and champion Large Wyandotte, but no majors. Ron Lait won bird of show and champion bantam hard feather with a beautiful dark Indian game pullet. He also won champion large hard feather with a large dark Indian Game hen. David Symons won reserve champion with a stunning Ancona cock bird, and Sellins won champion bantam soft feather with a black Pekin cockerel. A super Black Cayuga duck owned by Ron Davis won champion duck. Champion Waterfowl was won by Janish with a fawn Indian Runner duck. It was a long day as there were around 500 birds penned. What amazed me was the excellent standard of presentation of all the birds penned. It was so good to see such a variety of excellent birds.

There were large Cochins, Black Faverolles, Polish, Rhode Island Reds and Whites, Croad Langshans, Buttercups and Rose-combs just to name a few. We also had our Large Black, Blue and Blue Laced gold Wyandottes, that in my humble opinion didn't look too shabby. Our Blue laced Gold picked up champion AOC Wyandotte but was beaten by our Gold laced for Champion Wyandotte. They were the same 2 birds that placed in the nationals, with the Blue Laced winning over the Gold laced in Canberra.

It will be interesting to see how a different judge will view the same birds. It's also interesting that the black cockerel that did well in Canberra didn't even get a look in today.

Lawnton Poultry Club have done their poultry show cages like this for a few years now and it is a lot better than having the ducks and geese inside where they are more crowded and less visible. They use collasible cages that you can buy from places like ebay. They have a piece of carpet in the bottom of the tray so that the fowl has good grip when it is standing. They use bigger water containers which are much more comfortable for waterfowl as well. They cover it all so the birds have shade. It's a fair bit of work for them to set up and pull down but it's a very successful system.

Here's a video of some of the waterfowl exhibits.

I didn't see any salmon favs, but I did see some blacks and blues which puzzled me for a moment until we worked out what they were. I've put a couple of rough little videos of them in breeds here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7968987&start=30

Lawnton always puts on a great day. They were hampered a bit by the weather yesterday but the organisation, the fowls, the company and the food (thanks to Joanne + company) was terrific.

Here's a bit of a look at the Ancona that was Reserve Champion.

and the Bantam Indian Game that was Bird of Show
