The Sydney Royal National Poultry Show 2016

Media Release: Tuesday, 13 January, 2015 (Text of attached file below)

The Poultry Committee of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2016 Sydney Royal National Poultry Show at the Sydney Showground over the Queen’s Birthday weekend Thursday 9 - Sunday 12 June 2016.

Murray Wilton, RAS General Manager of Agriculture, said the Show is the pinnacle poultry competition in Australia and has become an institution on the Poultry Show calendar.

“The competition, previously hosted in Canberra, is held every four years and attracts exhibitors from every corner of Australia,” said Mr Wilton.
“Three years ago the Show drew 5,500 entries across soft feather, hard feather and water fowl, and with the competition open to anyone we hope to see even more exhibitors and entries in 2016.

“This is also exciting for Sydney Royal as it means providing greater engagement in agriculture outside of the Easter Show.

“The Show is also popular with the general public and attracts a solid crowd, including lots of families.

“The RAS is committed to forging a strong future for agriculture and this competition will help showcase the value of sustainable Australian agriculture and award-winning poultry to the wider community,” said Mr Wilton.

The RAS is excited to work with poultry exhibitors from all over Australia in the pursuit of agricultural excellence and invite all poultry exhibitors to consider taking part in the national competition.

More information about the Show will be available on the RAS website – http://www.rasnsw.com.au – over coming months and in the lead up to the Show next year.

Where do your entry fees go? Cost of running the National Poultry Show in Sydney & where is it going to be?

Someone recently asked what the $9 entry fee per bird would go toward. It's a good question if people aren't aware of the the costs involved in running a big event like that.

The entry fees, like any of the income taken in the course of running the shows, go toward covering the costs of running the show. The goal is to break even. There are costs such as equipment hire, cleaning, shavings, feed, vet fees, printing, stationery, admin staff, event staff, signage, transport costs, postage, security and so on. The estimated budget is just over $220,000. All these costs have to be covered by the income generated by the show.

Any breed club donations specifically for prizes would need to be a matter of discussion with the committee to ensure that it is allocated in a way that meets the expectations of the sponsor. As the costs of running this show are so high, it is hoped that some clubs will be prepared to donate to the general running of the show as well as to prizes.

On location - some are asking where in the showgrounds is it going to be. I've screenshot a satellite map of the Showgrounds and highlighted the three pavilions that will house the show - Falkiner, Mackay and Jenko. They front Kevin Coombs Avenue and Australia Avenue.

The Poultry Committee did a walk-around the pavilions as part of a planning day at the RAS of NSW yesterday.

This is the potential venue for the dinner on the Saturday night. The Jenko pavilion. Some plans were made for the staging and the layout. It's a massive venue. The auction may be held in here on the Saturday morning also.

I hope that the past week of weather hasn't impacted too severely on those who planned to attend - I can't think of any thing much worse than trying to protect or prep. birds in current conditions

A lot of birds from Tasmania were unable to cross in the ferry and are absent from the show due to weather.

No I did not enter any of my marans because they aren t vaccinated yet. I m going to start this year to do so.

I did manage to place an order with AvGen poultry of 20 marans chooks when available .She said around a spring time. I m looking forward to get them. pure fresh blood .
