Well done to the Newton family! That black hen is particularly lovely Cathy. Thanks for all the pics, great job done there.

I'm curious about the leg bands. Closed rings?

Once again, congrats on the sussex :-)

The range of dottes is very interesting for me to see, as a non-dotte keeper. There seems to be a variety of types (ie shapes) on display. I have particularly noticed the variation in topline, and in the degree of cut away and in the length of the body in some cases. I also have a question, based on complete ignorance, can you explain why the black hen is in an AOV class please? Is it an unpopular colour in dottes?

On type - the laced varieties are much harder to breed due to more selection criteria and less good stock being around People don't tend to win shows with laced varieties so there are fewer breeders and a lot of the birds are of lower quality. There is also a difference in feather quality between the whites and the laced varieties and that can also affect how they look.

In AOV there were blacks, blues, blue laced, cuckoos and buffs. In a specialist wyandotte show those colour varieties would normally have their own classes.

As always, photos look great and well done Cathy & Ben on your well deserved achievements.

Holy smokes, with respect go the breeder, hope this is okay to say because it is no secret, but gee that White Wyandotte's outside toes are turned back. We try to avoid showing or breeding birds with toes that turned back because we thought it was a major fault, but maybe we shouldn't be so harsh on our birds...

Cathy did you happen to get a photo of Len Edward's Light Sussex Bantam hen? I heard it was reserve Sussex of show. Interested to see a pic as I know Nev Donaldson had some strong birds there and would like to see the bird that beat them.

Yes, the turned toes on wyandottes, particular large, are a problem. They can range from a turned nail right through to a fully turned toe. The turned nails are pretty obvious there. I could show you dozens more photos the same as that from Nanango Wyandotte show so there is a trend. It's something wyandotte breeders have to watch out for.

Yes, on the photo of the bantam sussex. I hadn't uploaded all the EKKA photos here because of the sheer size of the folders but I'll get that one shortly.

Unfortunately she is crouching but she stood up with a flat back in her pen. She was a very nice sussex.

Saw some badly turned toes on another White Wyandotte taking out major ribbons including BoS this year. Made me scratch my head a little.
We have to watch it on our Buff Sussex Bantams. It is in the line and we are trying to keep it to a bare minimum.

That Light girl is quite lovely isn't she. Beautifully deep from side on. Good to see a hen placed up as reserve over the young up and comers!

I am curious, from your memory, Cathy (r anyone else who might know) do cockerels or cocks ever take out Best Sussex Overall at Ekka?
