How long does it take to become a judge? Is there a specific age to start (I'm still a teenager)? I've had poultry my whole life and been showing for 7 years. I'm interested in potentially becoming a waterfowl and pigeons judge in the future, so should I start the process now? Any help or advice appreciated.

The process differs from state to state. Where are you?

There is no reason why you can't start as a teenager. Ag shows are the place to cut your teeth.

Not knowing your location and circumstances it is difficult to give advice. If you are a member of a club then stewarding will provide you with an insight into what a judge does. Ideally, a mentor can be of great assistance. Being taken under the wing of an experienced judge can fast track your development.

I'm in SE QLD. I have stewarded at a few shows now and even won a couple novice judging competitions. I am our local poultry club and the SE QLD Waterfowl association. Would I need a mentor as well?

Hi J & T Poultry, I can tell you all about how our process works in QLD. I am the Judges Registrar and am part of the judge training group. You can have a look at the FCAQI website, it explains a bit about the basic process. We run workshops and will help anyone who is interested in becoming a judge. Best thing is if I ring you some time.

I've had a look on the FCAQ website about the process. Can you judge while still in the process of becoming a provisional or qualified judge?

Yes you can. Anyone can be asked to judge whether on the fcaqi register or not. All fcaqi offer is the help anyone to become a judge and to also maintain a list of Judges.

Thanks for your help. I only just realised it was you Peter, its James Herrmann. Would you know anyone who is a waterfowl and pigeon judge who would possibly be able to mentor me?

Hi James, was wondering who it was. There a few waterfowl judges in our area which I am sure if asked would love to help you and also have you accompany them on judging jobs if you want that also. Pigeons I will make an enquiry also and see what I can come up with. You are the perfect example of who I think would make a great judge. I will stay in contact.
