Well my wife really wanted some geese to help controll all of our goat head stickers we have around here. I think we have everything set up so we can get them this next week. I just have a few questions. Will they eat small evergreen and deciduous trees. I would like to use them where I planted around a hundred trees last year. I have a dip system ran to the trees so it makes it hard to mow. The trees are small, from a foot to about four foot. I have Silver Maples, Bur Oaks and two types of Pines. Will the geese bother these at all? Also I work at a sun flower plant and we make sunflower meal and pellets. I was wondering if it was safe for geese to eat this. Thanks for any help and I am sure I will have a few more questions later. Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt

The geese should ignore the trees bar a little leaf pulling, but they will trie of the pretty quickly.

Sunflower seeds are ok, but not too many.

I am not sure what goat head stickers are... are they a weed? If you want geese to control a certian weed that does not make up their usual diet, you need to feed them on it from a young age - so they get the idea - otherwise it can be a very long slow process.

What breed are you looking at getting?

Regards

Honk

Yes goat heads are a weed that make a sticker that will stick into anything. They cover the ground like a vine. We are getting three African Geese. Is it good to start them out on a chick starter? How long would I stay on a starter food. I plan on getting them to graze as soon as posible and will just feed them at night then. What is the best food for that? Thanks, Matt

when they are young they need a constant supply of the crumbs - until they are 6 weeks. Then mix some wheat with the crumbs, to reduce the protein content to prevent angel or rye wing.

They willl graze from day 3 or so, but need to be supervised to prevent crows having a free snack. ONce they are fully feathered, a few handfuls of wheat or corn per bird, per night will keep them warm and happy.

Good luck with the birds, i wish we had africans in Australia like the ones you have.

Regards

Honk
