Ross did answer/respond to your question. He quoted it and said he wouldn't bother trying to isolate Sooty. That's a perfectly reasonable response thing to say.

But feel free to talk about how you would isolate Sooty, RnBs, if you would like to.

I do plan on sticking with it. I am trying to source a top quality drake at the moment.

You might have to pop down to Victoria in June then.. Cayuga is one of the feature breeds!

You'd be after a good quality show bird I'd imagine?

Were about in June Koljash? I live in Victoria so I may be able to make it.

As it has been stated that I should not bring recessive white into a black bird, what coloured crested duck would you recommend to bring in for type?

Queens birthday long weekend - Saturday 6th June at Alexandra Showgrounds.
There should be a good turnout of cayugas there, and usually a nice batch of crested too. Doug Wilson has coloured birds. Usually khaki type

I will see if I can make it. It is about 3 hours from me so is manageable. Is their an auction/sale afterwards to be able to purchase some?

Not an auction as such, but there'd probably be a few birds for sale. No harm in asking. I've seen/had birds go from there and also the RMPS in July.

Least you'd stand a better chance of obtaining a bird that deserves to be in a show pen.

I think I may be able to pick up a god drake from a breeder near me. She has some top ducks.

It would be a good show to go to, just to get a look at some good Cayuga and crested ducks. I'm not sure it would be worth the trip with no guarantee of any birds being for sale though.

I have some good whites from a very good breeder so I plan to cross out to them to help improve type when I have the black colour set.

I wouldn't be so opposed to doing this. In fact you may be left with little alternative in your quest to regain type, if same not achievable otherwise. I would keep birds produced from this breeding separate so you can see what eventuates, know where it comes from, & discontinue this course if non-productive. Introduced white (c) would be the least of my concerns.

Besides, who knows; the whites may be masking beautiful black birds, or something very conducive towards breeding same.

Thanks for your response. I have recently purchased a good quality drake from Tony Glasson. He is free from white feathers but his bill is yellowing with age (He is 2 years old) but that is expected.

I will defiantly be keeping track of the offspring this season by toe punching. If I do the cross next season it will also be recorded.

With regaining type white may be my only option. When/if I do an across to regain type I will try look for some dusky ducks as a first priority, if not I will still have my whites to fall back on. But before an outcross to other crested colours I need to get a solid black bird.

Well I was right, the duck I bred last year carries the crested gene. I had my first hatch last week and I got 4 to hatch. I know that 2 have crests as I saw both when they were still a little wet but since they have fluffed up one has gone. I will keep all 4 to see if it returns once they have some feathers. I will try and get a picture of the crested one today. It's legs are all black and its down looks promising too.

Sorry about the delayed response, I got sidetracked. This is the duckling. Sorry for the poor photos, it was a bit hard by myself.
