Hi all,

A month ago i found a week old duckling where its butt has been run over by a car. Very bloody but it survived!

His name is Sammie and has his own facebook page where you can see him grow up. http://www.facebook.com/sammiedeeend

My name is Yvette and 28 years old. I Raised when i was young about 70 unwanted ducks from chick to adults. Its been 13 years the last time a duck set foot in my appartement so i'm full of joy about it that he still lives.

Likely his tail feathers are destroyed but i have hope it will start growing.

Lots of pictures and video's on the fb page.
I have a lot of knowledge about ducks so i hope i can help out new members with questions.

Sammie 1 week Sammie 4 weeks.

Welcome to BYP! Well done on rescuing Sammie. Great job. He is looking very healthy and happy in your care.

I wonder if he will turn out to be a she? Is s/he making any quacking noises or still making baby peeping noises?

Do you think you might get any more ducks?

Thank you! I think its a he, a feeling. Its been so long ago i don't know for sure. The voice does peep peep and then a peep lower. The females i had had very loud peep voices with Sammie it sounds a bit soft. But he is still in the peep peep face

If it turns out he can't fly because of its tail and nobody wants him he can stay and gets another mallard from the different breed. Whe are living in an appartement with a 3 meter by 2 meter balcony. Not a good place for a duck but we are planning on moving maybe this year. He can walk indoors and outdoors. We have friends with a large garden where they can live until we have a new house. But i think he goes to someone who has more ducks like a hobby with a pool and stuff.

Do you think it's a she? His head olso turns flawbrown my female mallards had an almost black head. Picture below af a female a raised.

Lovely pics :)

I find that females are making a distinct quack by 6 weeks and often the start of a quack before 4 weeks. If Sammie is a she I'd expect to hear quacking pretty soon.

Sammie is about 4 and a half week i think. Today we put some vinyl on the balcony en made it all ready for him. He loves it alot. Walks in and out to the couch for a mealworm. Will post a picture onder this post. Yes i also recognise that first female quack from a mile away so i'm still pretty curious what it wil be. If its a male mallard it wil have that stunning green face with that dark red crop. Can't wait!

Our duckling Sammie is growing really fast. On www.facebook.com/sammiedeeend you can also check out more photos and video's. He was run over by a car at about 1 week old. Tail was gone just blood and a small bit of spine poked out. Pulled the lose skin over the spine and it healed.

Today its a happy chap and can walk free around the house and balcony. I think its a male still not sure. The pieppiep face nearly to an end. What do you think?
