Hi, we are looking for a genaral sort of poultry book covering the various breeds, keeping, feeding, housing and breeding. I have found a few books mostly English ones but no Australian ones as yet. If anyone could recommend any that would be great.

Thankyou Ian

I have a large collection of poultry books, but most of what I have learned about poultry has come from talking directly to other breeders over the years. I tend to be disappointed in most poultry books, but my expectations might be too high. Rick Kemp's "pure breed poultry raising" would be my number one book for a general level starting out. Its published by kangaroo press, but hasn't been in print for a long time. They sometimes come up on ebay.

I suggest the books by Bruce Pattinson,
Forget if there were 3 or 4 books,
Managing Poultry for Home and Hobby,
The Rare Breeds,
The Major Breeds.
Wayne.

How do you get your hands on a copy of the Australian Poultry Standards? they seem impossible to find and even SAPA in SA have no idea when the next edition will be released.

Unfortunately, it's out of print. You can try to source it from ebay. But it won't be cheap. I, as well, am impatiently waiting for the new edition. :)

I have got a copy of Rick Kemp - Purebred Poultry Raising - and I think its fabulous. Very informative but not too technical. I was lucky enough to buy it for $7 at our local second hand bookstore !

I also like Alnna Moore - Backyard Poultry Naturally - Lots of great info on Health, permaculture, eggs, feed and heaps more
