I was reading the following historical poultry books last night, & it seems the same old arguments have been going on for over a century (ie clubs, exhibition poultry standards & shows: the ruin of utility breeds.....) :

--------------------------------
The Sussex fowl (1920)
by Sharpe.
download found on webpage
*An interesting look at the era when poultry standards were first being developed & clubs formed, the arguments for & against.

The Book of Poultry.
Wright, Lewis. 1891
Cassell & Co. Lt. London.
full book (53.9 MB pdf)
*note - very large file size. Right click & then ‘save target as’ (Internet Explorer) or ‘save link as’ (Firefox or Chrome), etc.
-----------------------------------

I think it was in Wright's book the mention of a Poultry Utilities club that was formed in the late 1890's. This was for competition of purebreds & crosses for laying/meat, & sort of a rebellion against breed exhibition standards.

Alot of good points made in both books.

No, don't have a copy.

At the moment I'm going through http://www.archive.org historical books list, but I'll quickly max out my download limits if I'm not careful, so I can't download & review each. But anyway, here's a couple to start....

The Poultry Book (1904) Volume 1
by Harrison Weir
http://archive.org/details/cu31924001090186
*webpage with download links

*includes large chapters on gamefowl, eg:

-Ancient and Modern Game-Cocks: 319
-The Modern Game- Fowl 359
----Points of Beauty 363
----Locating the Range 363
----Recipes for Making Cock-Bread 369
----The Muffed Game-Fowl 373
----The Tasseled Game-Cock 374
----Spanish Game- Fowl 376
----The Henny or Hen-Feathered Game-Cock 376
----The Azeel—the Indian Garne 377
----The Malay 385
----The Indian Chittagong 392
----The Australian Game- Fowl 395
----Cornish Indian, Miscalled Game 397
----Origin of Cornish Indian 400
----First Appearance of Spurious Indian Game at Shows 403
----An American Point of View 405
-Oriental Game-Fowls (By Dr. H. P. Clarke) 411
-General Remarks about Game-Fowls (By Dr. H. P. Clarke) 417
----Belgian 418
----French 420
----Spanish 422

---------------------------------------
I didn't realise until after the download that there are multiple volumes. I haven't found the other volumes for 1904, but the following are Volume 1 & 2 for 1903:

The Poultry Book (1903) Volume 1
by Harrison Weir
http://archive.org/details/poultrybook01weir
*webpage with download links

The Poultry Book (1903) Volume 2
by Harrison Weir
http://archive.org/details/poultrybook02weir
*webpage with download links

I've only downloaded the 2nd volume of 1903, & this has no sections on gamefowl (ie., has many softfeather breeds).

---------------------------------
The old English game fowl; its history, description, management, breeding and feeding (1891)
http://archive.org/details/cu31924003689167
*webpage with download links

*Both are great books!
