Well I have two ways of keeping mine quiet. The first a silky is in a Aframe pen that my dad built. You know one of those little ones that you see in the Handyman type magazines. Anyhow dad built a sliding door on the front of the sleeping quarters. So at night I just wait for them to go in and perch and pull the bolt out of the hole ,this holds it up through the day and down the door slides. The door is attached to a longer piece of wood so the end of it is up through the top of the cage and it can be pulled up and let down as you want. I hope this makes sence as it is hard to describe. My ancona is under a large plastic drum. It is cut down in height not a full height drum and has a perch set in and air holes all around the top. It doesn't stop the noise completely but does muffle/lower the volum. The drum is just a matter of lifting it up and putting him under. After a while he got used to it and didn't even put up a fight. Anyhow I just let them out in the morning and the neighbours are happy. Hope this helps.

ive just started using an old six foot tradies tool box with a ton of holes drilled in it...ive got it boxed up and warm inside, so they are off the metal. Its nice and dark, aerated well and with no condensation. The silkies dont see any light and i have it outside next to their pen and it works SWEET!

some roosters though... nothing will shut them up, you just got to muffle the volume like u said.
