Hi,

We have raised three Pekin chicks from 1 and 2 weeks old hoping they were hens.
My fear is that we now have three handsome boys instead.

Could someone cast their eyes over these photos and confirm my fears?
Also could some one confirm their colours?

Thanks.

First is Rosie (or Ross) 6 weeks old.

Second is Hey Moxie Girl (or Hey Moxie Boy) 7 weeks old.

Lastly is Barbie (or Ken) 7 weeks old.

Pekin chicks are notoriously difficult to sex, but I suspect that you may well have cockerels.

I hatched three Pekin chicks nine weeks ago. One was visibly a cockerel at three weeks (unusual, bit of an early starter) and the other two still do not have as much comb development as yours do at six and seven weeks.

Rosie/Ross looks like a black tailed wheaten. If it is a boy it will change to the gold-black wild type cockerel colour as wheaten is hen only, but I don't know at what age that happens.

Hey Moxie Girl/Boy looks like a black mottle but could turn out mille fleur, I'm given to understand that colour is very difficult to assess at a young age.

Barbie/Ken looks to also have mottling and probably a pattern gene, so could also turn mille fleur, or at least be from a mille fleur line.

Some people can feather-sex chicks when newly hatched, especially if familiar with their line, and these may have been sexed before they were sold. I had this happen with some that came with a broody I bought at auction. Fortunately I only wanted the broody. This is not a very honest practice if you told the breeder that you were looking for possible pullets.

If they were from my pens of birds, all boys. The wattles and general facial redness all point to male hormones running/galloping through them,

Ron (Not having had Pekins, so this is my get of jail card.)

Looks like the boys I have at home. What a shame, they look quite nice.
