Yup, definitely one boy to four girls. VERY well done. Throw everything at Marans - vitamins, preventative cocci medication, additional protein, additional warmth - with their soft feathers, they seem really vulnerable to the cold.

Once you get the girls to about 14 weeks they're generally ok but they do have a second vulnerable time just after they start laying (I've had two drop dead with no symptoms, even on a PM, about two weeks into their first lay). After that they're as bomb-proof as any other chook.

The boys are horribly vulnerable to absolutely everything until they're over 20 weeks old. Between 14-20 weeks they seem to pick up respiratory illnesses without even trying. I really recommend keeping them on-heat as long as humanly possible. They just seem to get cold.
