Hi All,

We have recently had new additions to the family! :chicks:

We know mum and dad are bantams (what type, we are unsure), but we are wondering how we can possibly sex the baby chicks?

We have noticed that two have really long foot feathers growing, so was thinking that might be a way, colouring? I'm not sure, we have one black and white, 3 yellowish/striped ones and one yellowish/striped with a white chest...

Any help would be great - and I don't want to do the vent sexing as I feel really mean squeezing them :(

Thanks

avoiding the vent sexing when not knowing what you are doing is a good thing, because it does have the potential to do harm.

the feet feathers and body colouring will not help you to sex the babies (unless the parents were sex linked colours) so you may hav eot wait til the babies are starting to show sexual characteristics such as boys having bigger combs etc.

how old aer your babies atm?

They were only born on Monday, so only 4 days old today.... I didn't think we were able to sex them this young, but no harm in asking :) :thanks:

It completely depends on the breed - or, at least, the breed of the parents. Have you got some photos?

Long foot feathers could mean Pekins. I think you can get a good guess on sex at somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks for Pekins, but some people wait quite a bit longer to be sure.
