Can anyone here tell me if you can tell if either of these is a roo? The one on the left has a short poofy tail and the one on the right has a long stiffer tail. I'm new to chickens and have no idea except that I know they are different looking. Thanks!!!

Sorry, I was on my phone and I pad earlier. Thank you for the warm welcome! In my second picture, the chicken in the front is the chicken on the left in my first picture. You can see the shorter poofy tail bird, "Lady Gaga" in the front doesn't look as feathered as the one in the back "Stella Bella" (on the right in the first picture). As far as the shape of the saddle feathers in helping determine sex, I have no clue what I'm looking at :).

I appreciate the help of more experienced chicken-ers. This is our first bunch. We got them on Feb 24th. We got 10! A Jersey Giant, an Australorp, two Light Brahma's, buff Cochin, White Rock, Buff Orpington, White Orpington, Blue Andalusian, and a Speckeled Sussex!

Still i am not sure Vicki :dontknow I have not owned Brahma so not familiar with them.
Give them a few more weeks. They both look like they are the same sex though, whatever that is.

it looks like 2 cockerels to me, going by the hackles and general body shape.
I hope I am wrong though!

Hi Scott. Oh my Gosh, that would be both hilarious  and a bit sad :-? . We're allowed one rooster where I live. We could possibly get away with two, but, wow..... that would be nuts. For the sake of argument, I WILL POST MORE PICS!!!

I don't know Brahmas but the top one appeaars to have saddle feathers starting so looks boy to me. The lower one a bit harder to see but i would say it has too. And as their combs are much the same I would agree they are the same sex. Bummer!

I just read that only one rooster is recommended her 6 to 10 hens. And since we have 10 altogether and maybe two of them Roos , we might have to get one a new home. That is a bummer. Does anybody else have any info on that? Thanks to you all for your help.

For brahmas, you would probably have fertility problems as there are too many pullets for the cockerel. It is possible that you could keep both roos in the same pen with all the pullets (as they have bee raised together), but they may fight.

hope this helps

Hi everyone,

I thought I would post updated pictures of the Brahama's in question at 12 weeks old. Hopefully there will be enough change that reveals whether or not they are ?both? cockerels.

Their combs seem to be getting very red. Unlike ANY of my other breed of chickens at the same age. And all my other chickens have that defined single row of beige skin color comb. These guys are just getting very red. Thank you!

Vicki
