Hello everyone.

We recently bought a hobby farm which came with a couple of sheep and 6 chickens. The previous owner said the chooks were only starting to lay but didn’t provide any further info.

We've been getting two different looking eggs from the chooks and we’re guessing it’s to do with the breeds of the chickens. Egg type one is smallish and white, egg type two is significantly bigger to egg one and browner in colour (we’ve weighed the browner eggs and they’re averaging 80-85grams per egg).

5 of the chickens are a brown colour – we’re guessing they’re hyline browns (there’s a breeder down the road so it’s a fair guess that’s where the owner got them). They’re also super friendly.

The last chook is different to the others (and is the one laying the bigger browner egg (plus is more stand-offish to the rest) – can anyone please help in identifying this 6th chook - Cheers!

She is a pretty crossbreed with possibly australorp in her background genetics (dark legs). Could be a mix of lots of things though.
She has a bit of scaley leg mite too which would benefit from treatment so she is more comfortable.

I bet all the eggs taste great for breakfast

Cool - I checked the chicken breed chart before my post and thought she looked either australorp-ish or barnvelder-ish.

Thanks for the tip on the mites - first time owning chickens so I'm trying to learn about them "on the job" so to speak.
