Hi, I’m new to the site and the world of chickens, having raised 6 Light Sussex chicks from a week old. They are now almost 9 weeks old and I’m trying to sort the roosters from the hens. I have two I’m ‘sure’ are hens and four I’m suspicious of being roosters. I’m mainly going off size, tails and their wattles and combs (the four have pronounced bits that are pale red-reddish in colour). There’s also a bit of sparing that goes on between most of them when I let them out of the coop, although it is started by one or two of the biggest.

My question is how long should I wait before I attempt rehoming the roosters so I’m sure they are actually roosters?! I’ve read that large breed/Light Sussex can be a bit tricky to sex. I really don’t want to lose a hen, or any of them really! In the pic I think I have a hen in the middle and the other two are roosters. They are typically what the other two look like.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this post.

With combs and wattles that big at that age, you can be pretty darn certain they are males.

While on the gender topic for sussex, can I impose?
these are 17 weeks old. The pure sussex seem quite immature to me. what genders do you think?

thanks!!

File comment: this one is a few days older than 02-17, about 50% bigger, but not as big as the crosses.

File comment: this one is tiny and looks like a pullet to me, but since feather development seems so slow, could it be just slow development?
