Post subject:  turkeys roosting spot

I'm new to raising turkeys, i just bought a bronz turkey today from a fellow at a flemarket. The bird looks like it has spent most of it life in a small cage looking at the way all of his feathers is destroyed, but now he has a cage thats 20x 30 and around 8 feet tall, i built a " roost" spot for him to roost at night but i check on him tonight and he is sleeping on the ground, is this normal or is it that he has to find it? its a wooden pole thats is around 4 ft in the air nailed between two trees. he is a jake, very young and has a quite gobble! any help on this would be great. thanks, Clint

Clint , If you are right and has been kept in a small cage he would not be used to a perch . Leave the perch you have but put in a second lower perch say around 2 foot ,such he can jump from one to the other. It might take a while for him to get the muscle development to do this.

Is he on his own....he will roost with other poultry.
quote Martin "a second lower perch say around 2 foot "
A food dish( make sure he sees you sprinkle the food into the dish) attached to the lower perch may help... H

if hes an adult he will be struting and he will tear his feathers up dragging them on the ground, if he is in the mud or wet he will get his feathers all messy, if he is in a cage he drags his feathers along the bottom wire and will trash them, put him on green grass, wait for a molt, he will be the best looking guy on the place
