someone told me that if we want to breed turkeys we need to get a saddle or coat for the hens. What are these and where do we get them? does anyone here use them on their turkey hens ? Are they necessary ?

They are to protect the hens from the roosters (or turkeys) feet and claws. The heavier the bird the more likey the damage so I guess turkeys are more prone to it, but I know nothing about turkeys. Here is a pic of some chooky ones - about half way down the page. viewto ... ?t=7955185

Hey Cheeky I used to breed turkeys and I never used saddles and never had any problems. I suppose it will all depend on how agressive your Tom gets. :?

Thank you Hubby and I have spent some time talking to breeders and have decided to get some hens and possibly another tom/gobbler. the tom we have has not been bred before and we will be keeping a close eye on our new girls when they arrive. I can't wait to get our girls . :D
