Probably female, Cheryl, as the wattles are flat. But keep in mind the only two sure ways are the female 'come back' call or if they lay an egg!

BB is very good at telling by looking at them as he is very experienced, so if he doesn't reply you could pm him.

I agree with NellyG on all of those points, i.e., my guess would be female too but you never can tell... and BB has a lot of experience, so I hope he'll weigh in.

I must admit I am stunned that anything that looks like that could be female!

My guesses:

Top pic: female - flatter shorter wattle
Bottom pic: male - long scooped out, cupped wattle

But await more expert advice...

Look at the wattles tes. In the top photo they are held flat to the side of the face - female. In the bottom one they are held out to the side and are cup shaped - male. but only about 70% accurate.

NellyG

PS - I love the way they look too. I think you get used to their look and funny ways. I thought they were very strange looking to start with!

PPS - excellent photos Cheryl! I will put a link to this post in the Guinea Index!

getting the pics was kind of funny. i was on my knees in the dirt in pitch dark aiming a torch and a camera at the poor birds. at one point i tripped and lurched towards them and ended up with guinea fowl scattering everywhere. they were awake after that so it took ages to get the last pics- they never hold still! its worse than photographing kids.
