I have some new quail - they are an off white colour with a dark spot at the back of their head and a larger one low down their back near the tail - They seem to be about the size of the jap quail of a friend. I was told they are king quail -but I really dont know - and I am sure that someone on BYP will be able to help.

Thanks Tanya

King (also called button or chinese painted) quail are a lot smaller than Jap quail. Pics would be helpful.

Chances are if they are the size of your friends jap quail.... they are jap quails. King quails are only about the size of a 2 week old jap baby.

I have some whites with brown spots on the back of the head and a few get body patches as well. If they are the same age then the larger of the 2 would be the female.

I'd say they are 'fawn' but I'm no expert - that's what I called mine that were that colour - there a lots of different colours - see http://www.poultry.allotment.org.uk/Poultry/Keeping_Quail/quail-coturnix-color.php
