Hi everyone,

I am getting a trio of Golden Pheasants shortly, and was wondering if someone could advise me what the best thing to feed them would be. I have heard various things being used from Turkey Grower, scratch mix, layer pellets & wheat. Is there a specific commercial diet sold in Australia for Pheasants? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Location: near Albury.
I use gamebird maintenance pellets and occaisionally add a bit of meat meal for extra protein.

They need higher protein than chickens, so if you can get game bird ration that is great. Higher protein is the reason why various people suggest things like turkey grower. Failing all that you can feed chicken layer pellets and supplement with some extra protein like mince or even cat food.

I feed my pheasants a gamebird ration, with some added grains only for variety. They also get fresh cut grass daily, plus defrosted frozen vege mix and some live food.

I forgot to mention - fruit is ok but only in small amounts. Some people recommend feeding lots of fruit to the birds but it is actually bad for them as it's too high in sugar! You're much better off with a top quality vege mix and fresh greens daily.
