Reported on the FCAQI website:

"Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Qld have notified us that Biosecurity Queensland have recently advised that a loft of racing pigeons in Victoria have been confirmed with having Pigeon paramyxovirus. This infection appears to be identical to the PPMV-1 strains that were first detected in Victoria 2011 and NSW in 2012.

The owner of this loft of racing pigeons had not vaccinated as there had been no recent outbreaks of the disease.

This is a timely reminder that Pigeon paramyxovirus is considered to be endemic in parts of Australia. Pigeon owners should ensure they practice good biosecurity within their yards and lofts and make sure all vaccinations are up to date, even in the absence of current disease reports."
