Post subject:  how old before keets can eat greens

Hi I'm a new guineafowl owner and I need help, my 5 week old keet has eaten a long stem of a old silverbeet leaf and has been moving its head side to side and making a squeeky noise like its trying to regurgitate it..how can I help it ? Thankyou

Hi, I wrote this in your other thread but am just copying it here:

Sounds like it is wedged in there somehow. Can you see the stem at all? If you can I'd try to get it out using a pair of blunt forceps (definitely do not use anything with any kind of point or sharp edge). Don't use your fingers either as you'll possibly just push it further down.

If you or the keet are unable to shift it then the worry is that it won't be able to eat, so I think it is important to try to get the stem out if you can. If you can't see the stem though then another option is to use an eye dropper to drip warm water into its mouth in the hope of softening the stem enough to allow it to move in one direction or another. Another thing you can try is liquid paraffin which won't rehydrate the stem at all but which might provide enough lubrication to allow the stem to move.
