Hi all,

Had a few quail on the bottom of an aviary a few years ago and have decided to get back into them again for eggs this time.

I'll be keeping them in a hutch. It's dimensions are 150cm long by 50cm wide. Just wondering how many japanese quail would live comfortably in there? Was aiming for between 5-10, is that ok?

Also, have heard that keeping a male in the flock is good for keeping the peace. Is this necessary? Not looking to hatch eggs.

Cheers in advance

I'd only keep up to 5 in a hutch that size, but farms keep them at much higher densities than that, so 10 might be fine.

As for males, unless you want to hatch eggs I wouldn't bother. They don't look after the hens like roosters do, they mostly just make a nuisance of themselves, and if you have more than one male they might have a crowing contest or fight. If you get the females at about the same age and time then they will probably get along fine once they've sorted out the pecking order.
