I picked up this tin and to my surprise it is still full (Don't worry I'm not going to use it)

I have a series of books with old adds in them from 1840 - 1940 and I found this advertisement for Merval Health Restorer.

Quote:
"Chickens cannot die if fed Merval"
... This is a pretty big statement...

So does anyone know anything more about Merval. I wonder what the ingredients are??

Not only are the claims somewhat unsubstantiated, but they don't proof-read - Merval in most spots, but MARVEL in the text

I don't believe this company is still in business?

Have you opened the tin to have a sniff?

My bet is on malt as the main ingredient but I really have no idea.

What a great find Guineafowl  , i love the marketing used on old tonics and medicines....

From near the bottom of the text , they have obviously stumbled upon the elixir of life .....

"Chickens cannot die if fed Merval"....now thats a claim and a half !

Na I haven't opened it RJ, the lid appears to be rusted shut and I dont want to damage it. It does not smell too good from the outside though.

I only bought it for the tin, I collect old stuff like this and I was not expecting it to be full.

Now I am curious what the ingredients are of this 'Chickens cannot die' tonic.

Nevertheless it looks good in my collection...

Haha sheesh. I would definitely buy some 'chickens cannot die' tonic if you could figure out the ingredients! I love all the stuff that was out and about before all those pesky false advertising laws became a big deal :)

Ad is from 1927, so if "Chickens cannot die if fed Merval" we don't have 88 year old chickens running around??

Ron (Noted the Marvel typo as well.)

it would be cool to have silver chooks run- make that hobbling around the yard laying once every 88 days!

Likewise I would love to know what goes into such a marvelous elixir! I wonder how the ingredients would compare with avtycoon's poultry spice, a recreation of Coleman's Poultry Mustard.

Hi, I collect old tins and wanted to share this one, which is in the book that the OP had in their pics. This is the earliest version that I know of, which is also the one in the book. Enjoy
