Backyard Poultry Info Centre

If you have a question about keeping poultry or if you just like reading and chatting about poultry, then a forum or newsgroup may be just the thing for you.

You can:
1. Check previous posts (someone may have already asked your question, and had informative reply's.). This can be done by clicking the button found at the top in the menu.
2. Submit a Question, or just introduce yourself
3. Read about what others have been up to, and other current news and gossip
4. Make world wide connections with people whose interests are similar.

Here is a quick tutorial for everyone who hasn't got the hang of the forums yet.

To be able to post messages and reply to other people's posts, first you need to register (found in the menu at the top centre) (Registration is a once-off thing)

Once you have registered you need to log on. (found in the menu at top centre)
If you want to log in automatically each time you access this forum click “Log me on automatically each visit “

To start a new post press

To reply to a post press

To use someone else post when replying, press

This icon means that there are unread posts

But this icon means that there are no new posts

You can change all your details (except your username) in user control panel (found on the top right of your screen). You can also add an avatar (a picture that appears under your name on every post)

Thank you for this Zilly. I'm new to such forums so it's a great help. Just one question; what does the term/icon 'Sticky' mean?

This forum is designed so that the latest posts are up at the top.

However a "Sticky" post is one that stays at the top of the first page of the forum, no matter how old the last post on it is. It is often used to post rules about the forum or pointers for beginners

Another type of post is an Announcement, which will appear on the top of every page of the forum. This one is used to make sure people know about important things happening, like when the website will be down etc.

To keep the forum fairly organised it is recommended to:

1. Put further comments about a topic in the same topic (instead of creating a new post), this can be done by pressing "Post Reply" button found both at the top and the bottom of the page
- These don't need a subject in the message

2. Don't forget to look for similar topics already being posted. Especially people greeting each other, here is a good forum post full of greetings:
http://forum.backyardpoultry.com/viewtopic.php?t=7 as this is a generic one.

3. When making a post, try to make the topic detailed, to explain what the post is about more coherently. Things that are generic like "help" or peoples names don't tell you anything about the post. So instead try things like "Help! my rooster turned into a duck overnight"

Practising all these things will make the forum easier to read, and don't forget there is a search button in the menu at the top. So keep posting

If you wanna make you forum post more exciting / fun, you can use the various buttons and emoticons located when you make a post. For example changing the Font color can make this stand out, so can putting things into Bold or Itallics.

Just remeber that whenever you have a tag which is represented by the square brackets [] it needs a close tag [/], so make sure you remeber to press the same tag again to insert the close tag.

If you are new to playing with colours and stuff, try a preview, and see if you like it, before pressing submit.

Also you can lighten up your post with emoticons or smileys by pressing the faces on the left. Like this :twisted: :evil:

Hello could someone please help me.
Sometimes the unread posts will show up and other times they dont. I have the box ticked, I'm not to sure whats going on.
Computers and I tend to clash a bit, they get me all confussed, the answer is probly right under my nose.

Thanks Zilly for this but i'm confused about the post a reply why doesn't it come up in the reply count

The reply count is the number of replies not including the first post. This means it is always out by 1 compared with the total number of posts. The total number of replies should then go up when you press the submit button.

Please do not post entirely in capitals. In the internet world, this is the equivalent of shouting. These posts could be deleted without warning

how do we find posts weve already submitted, cos i posted something, and now i cant find it so i dont know if there have been replies.
