Its an organo-phosphate, therefore its use is not something to be taken lightly. Never use it on the bird, with poultry it is for spraying the environment only.

I would prefer to use something like coopex in the environment.

I have used Maldison 50 on my chooks. I mix 10ml per litre of water for spraying and 5 ml per litre of water to wash them in. I try an avoid getting it on their face as it isnt a real pleasant smell. At night in summer I will spray them around the vent area once a month while they are perching.

I washed my pekin bantams in it at 5ml per litre and it made them very sick. I washed 7 birds and only 1 had no harm from it. The other six had varying reactions to it. I have used it before with no ill effects but i won't be using it again.
The chap from the rural supply shop told me to use it at 50mils per 10 litres to wash the birds.
What is the safest way of keeping hens free from Lice/mites?

Most often lice and mites come from birds that visit your chooks looking for food. The best way to try and avoid it would be to make your chook pen / yard bird proof. Good husbandry practices will also help. Pyrethrin is another good spray to use for lice and mites.

I use Fidos Free Itch Concentrate which is mixed 60ml in 6 litres of water in a rectangle mop bucket. Will do 12-15 birds before you have to top it up.Thoroughly saturating them. Use a spray bottle of the solution to thoroughly saturate the head for those pesty head lice.It smell beautiful, great for cuddly Silkies. If you wouldn't use it on yourself don't use it on your birds. Residual poisons will go into the eggs , who wants to eat poison?
