Post subject:  My rooster has turned into a Tasmanian Devil

Hello, I am a very new poultry keeper. My grand daughter brought home 3 little yellow fluff balls which I nurtured until I now have two brown and white hens who lay small brown eggs every second day. Lovely! BUT the third is a very large and handsome rooster(named Geoffrey) who is mostly cream with some brown patches. I am not sure what breed they are. I have a problem because Geoffrey attacked my adult daughter when she let them out of their house. He spurred her and she has long bleeding scratches down the back of her legs, right through her jeans. Until this week he might have attempted the odd peck but now I am quite frightened of him.
What can I do?

He sounds like an Isa Brown or Hyline type (as do the girls). If your daughter did nothing to provoke him, personally I would get rid of him. That is too much damage to risk happening to a young child if he happened to get access to one and I won't put up with behaviour like that from my roosters. you can work on modifying his behaviour but although i have found various techniques help (best I have found is picking him up and holding him firmly for a few minutes to show who is boss) but they wont cure him. If he has a feisty nature then sadly that is what he has. It might have worked in the wild to help keep his hens safe but it doesn't work in our set ups. I also wouldn't palm him off on someone else by rehoming.

You could try taking a broom with you when he is out or you (or anyone else) is in the pen, but don't turn your back.

Curtains for him if he was mine, broom trick works somewhat but the moment the kids drop their guard he will probably do it again. No point breeding from him won't breed true. So best to put him down , that's the best solution and Will stop you worrying..

What they said. There are techniques that you can try, to show him who is dominant but they will probably only work for you. You won't be able to trust him with any one else.

How can I get rid of him? I have also noticed that one of the girls is terrified of him. She tried to hide behind the chicken house tonight but I couldn't leave her there because of foxes that could get into the run.I felt like a domestic violence enabler.

You can remove his head. That will stop him!
You really cannot have an aggressive rooster around children. It is too dangerous for the kids.

You will need to euthanase him or if you can't bring yourself to do it, get someone who knows what they are doing to do it or take him to the vet. it is tough but that is the life of a rooster owner I'm afraid.

My local Mitre 10 man says that he had an angry rooster that was taken away by someone called "The Rooster Man" . I live in Monbulk in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Has anyone heard of the Rooster Man?
Poor Geoffrey. I have 13 grandchildren between the ages of 11 years old and 9 weeks old. They have to come first

Try to think of him as a viscous dog if that helps. You wouldn't have a dog that attacked for no reason.

Roos can make a mess of humans as you have seen. Ours was called Chookati Veyron & was a total sociopath. He was also a very large Orpington. In the end he would stalk us. He met his maker after I eventually refused to go into the run & husband realised what an issue it had become.
