So I've been sick with the dreaded gastro since Tuesday, and haven't been giving the chooks much love during that time. They're set up with about 10 days worth of food and water, but I usually visit them several times a day to bring them their greens, collect eggs, give them some grain before bed, and deposit any tasty weeds or my strawberry tops into their run throughout the day. But I didn't do that while I was sick.

This morning I went into their run and noticed something black on my Polish hen's face. Is a big infected lesion on and around her eye and face. I cant tell if the eye is still there. It could have started as something as simple is a scratch above the eye or a grass seed in the eye, which may have gone unnoticed for a few days due to her sumptuous crest. Now it's turned into a horrible gaping mess that I'm sure there's no coming back from. So I have to do the deed :(

So I guess this is just a warning to others - to pay special attention to your crested birds eyes and face. I'm sure this started as nothing serious, but it only took a few days to get really bad, and if I had made a point to check her eyes and the area hidden by her crest frequently I think it could have been avoided.

Sorry chooken :(

So sorry Levrette :hug , it would have been hard to notice under a crest - let alone whilst youve been ill. Dont beat yourself up :hug

oh no. it is horrible to find something like that. Don't be too hard on yourself. Chooks dont show they are feeling off.

Thanks everyone. I feel better about it now. My friend came over to help me. It was very quick, but it was sad.
