It's the time of the year when egg colour is at it's best. As the laying season progresses, the external pigments will start to fade and egg colour will become less intense.

Here are some of this weeks eggs.
The bottom row are from the Barnevelders, the white eggs were laid by my Anconas and the darkest eggs (top row), the Marans and Marans cross.

Here is a jar of mixed colours - taken a couple of years ago.
These eggs are being 'truffled'

Nice eggs sue, and good to see a row of marans and a row of barnies to compare  . Checked my barnie eggs from the fridge to yours, most were the same as the botom row (barnie)and one was the same as the first on the left at the top marans row, looking forward to breed jose's marans roo over them and see what their pullets lay like. Will hatch some from the two maran cross isa hens too.the slw cross barnie chick

I'd be happy if mine started to lay. Should be soon.

Tell us about the Shamo eggs. Are they good layers? What size eggs do they lay? - they look similar to the production hen row

The girls have started! Mind you, I was surprised that Beulah the Orp has started already. She moults so heavily there are bald patches & her comb is not bright red. I know it was her, she was caught in the act!

Not sure who laid the others I collected yesterday. They might have been there for a few days. Hubby checks & throws treats in the mornings.

Beulah's egg is far left.

Mycoola just a quick question about this chick- have you done this cross before and if so, what can you tell me about the progeny?
I have a possible home for my slw Cockerell with a flock of barnie girls and I'd like to know more about the probable offspring.
Thanks!

Sorry to hijack the thread- absolutely no eggs here. Hopefully soon.

First time I have done the cross, as the first season I have had barnies.but they should be all silver single laced as the Columbian gene from the slw pushs the lacing to the outside edge of feathers. This first chick is developing into a nice laced pullet, has wyandotte comb. I suspect that when these offspring lay the egg colour will be a tinted egg with a pinkish shade and not dark like the barnies. But they should have good hybrid vigor. I dare say the cockerals would be excellent eating. I also have for curiosity put a barnie pullet in with the black laced red bantam wyandotte cockerel.

The second pullet has only a spangle pattern so it must be from the marans cross isa hen. I have just set another 27 eggs in the bator most of which are slw cross barnie, will be selling the young .
