I have a partiular interest in how behaviour affects the success of a species.

Black Swan Homosexual Behaviour
Are Black Swans Gay?

It has been estimated that up to 33% of black swans are homosexual and that nearly 25% of all black swan couples are same-sex couples. These couples are almost always two males getting together. These males sometimes steal a nest from a heterosexual couple and raise the young as their own or one male copulates with a female and once she has laid her eggs they chase her away and raise the chicks themselves.
Scientists believe there is a biological advantage in this behaviour as it appear that there is a higher survival rate amongst cygnets (chicks) raised by male-male couples than by male-female pairs. This may be due to the fact that there is an additional male to protect them and that having chosen to be parents they are more caring than natural heterosexual pairs.
Note: Homosexual behaviour amongst animals has been observed in over 1500 species. Besides black swans, these include the giraffes, vultures, bears and dolphins.

I can see by the explanation that the cygnets might have a higher survival rate, but in a Darwinian sense how does that translate to reproductive success for the male parents? Do they tend to steal progeny preferentially from close relatives perhaps?

Swans are not migratory and only minimally nomadic so probably tend to stay in family groups therefore the gene pool would probably be quite closed (guessing here). There is also the use of a surrogate mother to start the family.

In a lot of bird species to there is a higher ratio of male to female offspring especially in species where the male is brightly coloured eg Goldern shouldered parrots , Hooded parrots whereas the ratio is 4 to 1 due to the males being easy prey to predators. I and a mate have observed this in both our avairy birds of the above species. So has a study been done to see if this is the case for swans , and there isn't enough females , or the female population is being targeted by predators, foxes will swim, and maybe are reducing the number of hens. :hmmm:

We did not run our rams with the ewes all year round because we need to have the lambs being born all at about time period. So we joined the rams with the ewes in spring for an autumn lambing and in Autumn for a spring lambing.

The rams retain their libido and once they realise they cant jump the fence, the commonly copulate amongst themselves. I guess its a sheep form of prison sex.

Enougher joke sorry.
A farmer looks at hes he's old rooster and says i must replace him he's getting old, so on Sunday he picks up a nice young roo from the markets and takes him home. Upon he's repease in the pen the old wryly roo approaches him and says so you think your the ants pants huh, sure am he replies not a washed up old roo like you.
The old roo says i challenge you to a race, your on says the young one, the old roo says but give me a chance with a ten mitre headstart, huh no worries says the young one i will still knock your socks off.
So off goes the old roo and when he hits the ten mitre mark off goes the young one and he is quickly gaining on him, looking out the window the farmer spots this and comes out and blasts the young roo with the shotgun, muttering under his breath damn thats the 4th poofter roo I've brought home :doh . So wisdom beats bravo every time.. :laughing

Animals aren't just homosexual either, there are all sorts of sexual groupings, https://oddorganisms.com/2014/02/26/hom ... lag-geese/
