I have been keeping some aside to incubate but don't think I will just yet.
They have been in an egg box on the kitchen bench.
Anyone know how long they will keep for?
Weather has not been that warm.

Viability generally starts to drop after 7-10 days. But if it's been longer than that it's definitely still worth a go.

The Eastern Rosellas that used to breed in a box that i put up at work, unfortunately that derelict building has been demolished :upset: . They used to raise 7 chicks most years and had 100% hatch. Easterns lay every second day as does most parrots so the oldest would be 14 days old, but they would have started incubation from egg 6, at 12 days. Most parrots start to incubate from the second last egg. I have had no problems hatching eggs at 10 days old.

If you are not going to set just yet and eat the eggs then 4 to 6 weeks they should still be fine, the only thing is as eggs age the white or albumen goes watery and spreads out when you try to fry them or it just breaks down into the water if you poach them, for any other purpose they are fine.
If you think now you may set them then the lack of turning each day not age could be a problem with hatching.
A hen turns and moves the eggs around daily when she goes back to the nest to lay.
If you save eggs to incubate they need to be stored in a cool place, point down and rocked to one side and then back on consecutive days so as they are moved a small amount each day, so the first day tilted to the right and the next tilted back to the left.
If a hen stole a nest and laid 20 eggs then set, the oldest would be at best 20 days old and likely she would bring out 18 or 20 in the clutch.

What I meant was, I don't want to incubate the eggs now so can use them to eat? 4-6 weeks is good, so at least I could feed them to the dogs and they won't go to waste.

If I am wanting to incubate the eggs I normally put in the egg carton I am storing them in perched on a fulcrum so they are rocked once or twice a day.

From my last hatch, the oldest egg that actually hatched was 9 days old when I put it in the incubator. Are you saying that they could be 20 days old and still viable to hatch?

So many factors influence the viability of fertile eggs. A lot of it is before the egg is even laid. While we are discussing a finite failure of viability the important bit is that the fresher the eggs are the better the chances of a good hatch.

You can hard-boil them and feed to the dogs and the chickens. If they are bad they smell bad.

Eggs kept at between 12C-16C (the best temperature for keeping eggs) will easily be safe to eat for 6 weeks.

I've eaten 3-month-old eggs from the fridge (4C).

I've seen week-old eggs go bad inside the house, or in hot summer temperatures.

Basically, it's all dependent on temperature.

If in doubt, do the float test - put the egg/s in water deep enough to cover them well. Good eggs sink. Bad eggs (containing more air). Anything between fully-flat and floating needs to be treated with a little care - boil well, or crack into a cup first before using.
