Just a generation ago, Australians kept chickens for their eggs. The meat they ate was the cockerel, or spent layer hens. Eating chicken was considered a luxury, savoured at Christmas and other special occasions.

Yet today, Australians eat 623 million chickens a year, or 46 kilograms each.

We‘re disconnected from the life and death of the bird—chicken meat is sold on a polystyrene tray.

So I’m making art to reconnect people to the chickens that they eat.

I hope to reconnect Australians with chickens, the living being, and help Australians rethink it's role and value.

And to persuade people to eat less, but better, and minimise waste.

To do this, I need your help! I need you chicken stories and bones.

Send your chicken story
Reward: Your contribution may be used to create an artwork, and be shared on social or traditional media. You’ll be publicly acknowledged online, and if your story is exhibited, you’ll be credited. You’ll also be kept up-to-date of the project’s progress.

1. Reflect upon your connection with the life and death of chickens. Are they named? Which breed? Illustrate their quirks and personalities with a story. How has your chicken consumption changed? What changed it? Why?
2. Write your name and location.
3. Send your story, and accompanying high-resolution photos if you have some, to info@flavourcrusader.com.

and/or

Send your chicken bones
Reward: You’ll receive a ceramic token of appreciation. Your contribution may be used to create an artwork, and be shared on social or traditional media. You’ll be publicly acknowledged online, and if your bones are exhibited, you’ll be credited. You’ll also be kept up-to-date of the project’s progress.

1. Pledge your chicken bones to info@flavourcrusader.com.
2. Once you have enjoyed your meal, and made nourishing stock, remove the meat and cartilage remnants from the bones.
3. Rinse the bones. Dry them in the sun, or in the oven on low heat.
4. Wrap the bones well. Label them with your chicken’s details: name, sex, age, breed and personality insights. Add a handful of feathers if you have them.
5. Write your name and location. Include your reply-to address to receive your ceramic reward.
6. Post your parcel to: FlavourCrusader PO Box 1015 Surry Hills NSW 2010.
