I recently attended an auction and after taking one of my hens to the vet yesterday with resp she informed me that they were treating quite a number of poultry that had been purchased there. However, I have contacted a few of my friends who have all lost chooks in the past week bought from the auction and was wondering if anyone else had.

As mine had a secondary infection it was suggested that my hen was already infected although showed no signs for the first 8 days. She had crackles, sneezing, fever.

Obviously it's highly contagious and viral but won't stop me buying at auctions.

Any where where there are a lot of animals (or people) there will be 'bugs' transmitted'. Respiratory viruses are highly contagious but often dormant until stress (eg auctions) triggers an outbreak. This is one of the reasons why it is advised to quarantine all new birds. It reduces their relocation stress and protects your existing stock.
Keep up the TLC and feed her the best diet she will eat. Some additional vitamins will sometimes help.
