Hi everyone, chicken newbie here so please excuse my ignorance.

I’m seriously thinking about getting a rooster for my girls. I live on acreage so annoying the neighbours isn’t a problem. My problem is that I am a light sleeper and the chook yard is right outside my bedroom window so I am worried a rooster will wake me up at ungodly hours of the morning or night.

Someone told me to just use a crow collar to stop the rooster from crowing. Sounds good in theory but are they cruel? Do they work? Are there any other alternatives? I’d like your opinions please and also opinions from people who have actually used them.

Also, if I do get a rooster, will my girls likely go broody? I don’t really want broody chooks.

Thank you :-)

your hens will go broody, regardless of whether they have fertile eggs or not. it is to do with the change of day length which affects the melatonin hormone, amongst others. so it doesn't matter

roosters are great looker afterers of their girls.

finally, i believe rooster collars to be cruel. they do not work anatomically correctly, the source of hte crow is deep in the chest where the syrinx is, and is not affected by the crow collar. the crow collar stops the rooster getting a full breathe of air. i don't think i would like something around my neck all day which stops me from taking a full breathe of air.
