I am trying to get my partner interested in chickens and she likes the look of pekins, I would like to buy a quality breeding pair or trio of pretty much any colour.. what have you got or do you know someone who breeds quality pekins around central coast nsw area.
Thank you

I'm not sure how close/far they are from you, but I have some Pekins from Watagan Farm who I think are in the Lake Macquarie area. I bought them as eggs rather than live birds, and they are very healthy, robust little things.

They are bred to standard, but they aren't those ridiculous looking show Pekins that look like non-functional feathered balls with heads.

Have a look through the photos of her birds and decide for yourself. Personal preference does play a part in any bird you pick.

Personally I avoid any breeder that sells 'show quality' birds, as it is so subjective and at the end of the day, can just mean nothing. First and foremost you want birds that are bred to their standard.

If they conform to the APS2 they are show quality but until you on breed yourself, you are not showing your own birds, you are looking for accolades for some one else's work

I do not want to do that, I just want some decent birds rather than from a breeder who mass produces is all, I'd like to breed my own to show eventually just looking for a starting point would be happy to get birds from different breeders to make a seperate strain that one day might help others with their own breeding programs

True, shows are ultimately guided by the APS2.

Unfortunately though what may be advertised and sold as 'show quality' does not mean they are bred to standard, or really show quality at the end of the day.

Always aim for breeders who breed to standard, and the rest will follow. There are quite a few Pekin Bantam groups on FB that have very good breeders in them, so it's worth joining and seeing who you can find, if the breeders Sue and I have recommended aren't what you're after.

Best of luck with your search. Pekins really are funny little birds, I wasn't expecting to like them quite as much as I do now, lol.

I contacted her but it appears a lot of people don't have much available at this time of the year :(

Breeding season is just starting so most breeders have culled down to their breeding pens. Plenty of fertile eggs will soon be available -You could buy an incubator and really start from scratch.

I have two incubators, wouldn't mind doing it from scratch but last time I bought eggs from someone the fertility was 2/12 and I paid over 100 for the dozen.

Hopefully better luck this time :o
