I've noticed, in recent years, a recommendation from Australian poultry owners to feed unwell birds on "Vegemite water" - water some Vegemite dissolved in it. It's been a pick-me-up in the human population since time immemorial, because of the rich flavour.

The reasoning is the Vitamin B and yeast content, as a nutritional boost.

However, poultry have among the lowest tolerance of salt of all common livestock - only pigs have a lower tolerance. You can easily kill birds with too much salt.

Quote:
Chickens can tolerate up to 0.25% salt in drinking water but are susceptible to salt poisoning when water intake is restricted. Wet mash containing 2% salt has caused salt poisoning in ducklings. High salt content in wet mash is more likely to cause poisoning than in dry feed, probably because birds eat more wet mash.

If you need to provide a quick vitamin boost for unwell birds, Berocca or other soluble human vitamins are a much, much better idea than Vegemite.

Even better is a specific avian formulated vitamin.
Vegemite contains 173mg of sodium per 5g (a teaspoon).
