Hi everyone,

I have a Isa x Leghorn x Australorp chicken who is about 2 or 3 years old. She has been a fantastic layer but two months ago she just suddenly stopped laying and hasn't laid an egg since. I don't mind her not laying but should I be worried that she is ill? When I've had chickens who've stopped laying before, it's usually meant something was wrong.

I've examined her and can't see anything obviously wrong. Her behaviour is completely normal, and their feed hasn't changed.

Is there any health condition in particular that I should check for? Or is she likely to be just having a break, even though it's not winter?

It's quite normal for a hen to slow down or stop laying altogether once we're heading into summer. Given that your hen is a mix of layer breeds, she might have kept laying during summer during the previous years and I'd say that, in general, going off the lay during summer if she seems to be healthy, otherwise.
I'd still check a few basic things. Has she been wormed with a complete wormer and is she free of external parasites? Worms and external parasites can be a reason for slowing down and can eventually lead to illness. But as said, it might be a completely normal thing for her to have stopped.
