This is something which I haven't seen before.

One of my Barnevelder pullets approx 20 weeks old has what feels like fluid (or maybe air?) around one hip. The best description would be a water balloon. I've been monitoring her for several weeks. The size and feel has remained consistent with her growth. She appears healthy, is active and developing at the same rate as the rest of the hatch. The only obvious difference is the squelchy bulge on one hip and maybe lack of muscle tone. Skin appears normal.
Is this Ascites? Does Ascites occur other than the abdominal/pelvic area?
Other possibilities - heart condition? (no symptoms of cardiac stress) Tumour? (if so progression seems slow). Lymphoedema?
I've considered drainage but suspect that the result would be temporary. If she shows any sign of decline I will euthanize her.
Any thoughts?

Not Ascites I wouldn't think. Sounds like fluid from some reason other than heart. Maybe lymph blockage? Tumour or cyst is possible but they tend to be hard rather than squishy as they are usually fluid in a confined area. Squishy means the fluid is in a large cavity and not under pressure (I think). Sounds weird!

i agree, doesn't sound at all like ascites.

may however be a ruptured air sac, as these are found all over the body

if it is not causing her distress, i would not be too worried about it

Update on 'Squishy'
She is still doing well and developing at a similar rate to her sisters. She also appears to have deflated somewhat and just has a couple of separate 'bubbles' on one leg. She no longer looks like a helium balloon which is about to burst or take off. She is young enough to hopefully grow into the loose skin.
I suspect that you were right Cal. about it being leaky air sac They 'crackle and pop.'
