Your Location- country, state (different areas/climates have different problems)
ANSWER: Dandenong ranges VIC

What is wrong? What symptoms have you noted? - As much detail as possible please.
ANSWER: panting, fast heart rate that seems to speed up and slow down- I can feel her pulse in her chest it is very strong and fast, unstable on feet with wings out for support, sitting quietly, toes curled

What are you feeding? - Please list everything you're feeding to your birds, including type of basic feed, free ranging, scraps, extras, etc. If possible give approximate percentages.
ANSWER: can't remember off the top of my head, a pellet by Baristoc?? I think golden yolk, she was free range yesterday, but in the cage all day today with only access to pellets and some scrap carrot peel in the morning.

Full droppings description.- colour, consistency, frequency, offensive smell.
ANSWER: seemed pretty normal, brown and white, wet but not super runny, smells normal

Respiratory Changes?- eg. breathing sounds, discharge, laboured breathing, facial swelling
ANSWER:panting with mouth open, breathing is quiet

Digestive Changes?- eg. eating, drinking, crop filling & emptying
ANSWER: seemed thirsty when I put water on her beak but wouldn't drink herself, I can feel a small to medium amount of food in her crop. She was eating fine yesterday

Condition Changes?- eg. Weight, comb/wattle colour, skin, feathering
ANSWER: all look fine, this all seemed to have come on during the day

Behavioural Changes?- inc. socialising, laying, crowing, broodiness
ANSWER: just started laying last week

Agility Changes? - eg. any lameness, favouring, energy levels
ANSWER: she managed to get on the perch tonight, I took her into the house when I realised something was wrong and she sits with her toes curled under her, doesn't move much, can stand but is unstable

Describe your usual worming routine and products. [If none, say so and skip the next 3 worming questions.] Do you have a cycle that you use eg. every 3 months, or every six months?
ANSWER: I worm every 3 months with Vetsense Kilverm

1. When was the bird last wormed??- approximate date.
ANSWER: 20th August

2. What product was used to worm the bird, and how was it given? ? eg. in the drinking water, on the skin, by injection?
ANSWER: Vetsence Kilverm in drinking water

3. Was a follow up dose given? (eg. 10-14 days later)
ANSWER: no

Any other recent medications?- antibiotics, coccidiosis meds, herbal remedies, etc
ANSWER: yes, and I'm not sure if this may be the issue or just a coincidence. I have 9 hens and they had a few lice so I dusted them yesterday about midday with Pestene insect powder. I checked them this morning and didn't notice her acting any different, I didn't see them again until this evening after I got home from work and noticed her panting even though it is quite cool. All the other hens look fine. Does this sound like Pestene poisoning? I've given her a bath to remove any remainder from her skin.

Other changes? – additions to the flock, diet, housing, extreme weather
ANSWER: it was very wet over the weekend and the chicken coop turned to sludge with all the mud

Photos? – any relevant photos are very helpful

Yes, I've been using it for maybe 15 years now without any issues.

I've tried to get her to drink some water and put her in a dark box. She occasionally gives a squark and flaps about, not sure if it's some kind of fit or if she's just worried about being in a different place. When I feel under her chest it's all twitching like a quick strong pulse. Not something I've seen before in a sick chicken

She's looking a bit better today! I'm really surprised, I didn't think she would make it through the night. She got much worse late in the evening last night, constantly trembling and gasping with her legs laying to the side and her wings out, and squarking and shuddering ever few minutes. I gave her close to half a cup of water with epsom salts mixed in as I had heard that is good for flushing their bowels if they have eaten something they shouldn't have, though it didn't seem to move anything along. I also gave her a dose of Oxymav B since it was the only type of poultry medication I had on hand, then left her for the night.

This morning she is no longer panting or trembling, and her toes have uncurled so she can stand again. I also realised that her body is quite cool now compared to last night, so I guess she was running a temperature. She still won't eat or drink but i've dosed her again with the Oxymav this morning.

Does this sound like she just had a chicken fever or something?

Sounds like a reaction to something toxic - stagnant water, dead carcass, mouldy food (compost) herbicide?
Hopefully she will recover fully.
