Hi, just after some advice on what to do with a sick chicken. She's falling over, even when just standing still, and putting a wing to the side when she does. She's walking very slowly/wobbly. She has lost weight. Her crest has faded and she has green poo all over her vent. She's still eating and drinking but i dont think she's laying (hasnt for a little while). She's our 4 year old's pet so would love to help her if we can, but obviously dont want her to suffer if she cant be helped. Any advice would be great! Thanks

Hello Sjmel . There are a variety of things which may cause this. We need some more detailed information.
The green poo indicates that she is not absorbing what she eats.

Okay, thanks! Answers below...

Age: About 18 months
Breed: Plymouth rock
Sex: Female

Your Location- country, state (different areas/climates have different problems)
ANSWER: Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia

What is wrong? What symptoms have you noted? - As much detail as possible please.
ANSWER: Falling over, even when just standing still, walking slowly/wobbly, green poo all over vent (bright green...possibly white and green mixed together?? as poo looks dark green), faded crest, lost weight, looks hunched (head lower than normal), not laying, spends most of the day just sitting down, can't run (used to run really fast for food - now just walks and sits/falls and has a rest on the way). She's been quite bad for 3 days but maybe longer without me noticing. The falling down is getting worse each day.

What are you feeding? - Please list everything you're feeding to your birds, including type of basic feed, free ranging, scraps, extras, etc. If possible give approximate percentages.
ANSWER: Pro grain backyard layer feed (prior to this an organic chicken mix). She also roams the yard freely most of the time, eating whatever she can find. We feed some scraps (crushed egg shells, lettuce, spinach, rice occasionally etc)

Full droppings description.- colour, consistency, frequency, offensive smell.
ANSWER: dark green, sometimes runny, sometimes more solid, bad smell

Respiratory Changes?- eg. breathing sounds, discharge, laboured breathing, facial swelling
ANSWER: None that I've noticed.

Digestive Changes?- eg. eating, drinking, crop filling & emptying
ANSWER: Still eating and drinking what I put in a bowl in front of her

Condition Changes?- eg. Weight, comb/wattle colour, skin, feathering
ANSWER: She's lost weight (in hindsight this has been happening for a while...maybe a month or so?... but I can't be 100% sure). comb is a faded red colour. She's lost some feathers around her head and belly. I'm not too sure about skin.

Behavioural Changes?- inc. socialising, laying, crowing, broodiness
ANSWER: We only have two chickens (same breed, age etc) so no change socialising-wise, other than the fact she just sits in the same spot most of the day. She isn't laying and hasn't been for a week or two (I think). she has never been broody.

Agility Changes? - eg. any lameness, favouring, energy levels
ANSWER: Seems very weak, falls over a lot (I think to the same side - her right), puts her right wing out when she falls. I'm not sure if there's an issue with the leg on that side, when she does walk (i.e. for food) it's a very slow walk and she sits down for a rest or falls down and then rests for a bit before gettimg up and coming for food (she used to sprint from one end of the yard to the other for food).

Describe your usual worming routine and products. [If none, say so and skip the next 3 worming questions.] Do you have a cycle that you use eg. every 3 months, or every six months?
ANSWER: We have never wormed her.

1. When was the bird last wormed??- approximate date.
ANSWER:

2. What product was used to worm the bird, and how was it given? ? eg. in the drinking water, on the skin, by injection?
ANSWER:

3. Was a follow up dose given? (eg. 10-14 days later)
ANSWER:

Any other recent medications?- antibiotics, coccidiosis meds, herbal remedies, etc
ANSWER: None

Other changes? – additions to the flock, diet, housing, extreme weather
ANSWER: No big changes.

Photos? – any relevant photos are very helpful

OK thanks for that.
The first thing I would do is to worm them both. Use Worm Out tablets (may be available locally) or Moxidectin Plus from Gecko Dan - http://www.geckodan.com/the-chookshop/ Avitrol Plus is an other option (but pre fasting is advised so best not for an unwell bird).
There are other wormers readily available but they do not cover all the worms.

Question - does she eat everything in the layer mix. Most of the protein is in the crumble so if she is selecting specific grains she is not getting a balanced diet.

Question - is it possible that she has accessed anything toxic/mouldy/composting?

Okay thanks! Ill see what i can find to worm them tomorrow. I havent noticed her picking anything specific oit of her food but will check that tomorrow too.

When i noticed she was sick i checked/cleaned the pen and there was some green, maybe mould in the water. So i took that water container away a couple of days ago to clean. Otherwise its possible she's eaten something mouldy from the pen/around the yard but i cant think of anything specific.

its most likely that the green in the water container was harmless Green Algae but a good clean of their water container won't hurt
