Hello hoping someone can help me with one of my girls that is not going too good. She has a few tail feathers that seem broken and missing and also has a red pimple kinda sore around the area, I have taken a couple of pic's. She lives with just one other chook, I got them both at the same time, the other one is the bossy one and this girl is the quieter one of the two, I am not sure if my girl gets hen pecked by the bossy one but I have seen the quieter one snatch food from miss bossy britches so I think she may stand up for herself if need be. Is there anything I can put on the sore spot it looks like a pimple or something. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks again.

Hi healzam....thanks for enquiring...no she is still the same but we had a closer look at our other girl and she seems to have the same raised bit...so I am not sure if my girl is meant to look like this or not ? Very puzzled indeed. The worrying thing is that she seems to have some of her quills or feathers broken off so I don't know what to do or who to ask, it seems that nobody on here could give me any idea either...so I am none the wiser unfortunately. :-(

The raised pimple looking thing is probably just the oil gland. AKA preening gland or uropygial gland. It’s a normal bit of anatomy. So don’t worry about that :)

The scrappy looking feathers are not great but it’s not unusual for commercial strains of laying-bred hens to be poorly feathered....they put all their nutritional effort into their eggs. The best thing you can do is feed them really high quality food. I reckon you can’t go past Laucke Showbird Breeder. But any breeder ration would be good to use. What are you feeding them at the moment?
